Toni Reece: Thank you so much, Zorica, for agreeing to be part of the Project today, and before we begin, can you please introduce yourself?

Zorica Denton: Yes, hi.  My name is Zorica Denton.  I’m owner and founder of Zorica’s Malibu Skin Care.  I specialize in organic and natural bath and body products and, of course, skin care for the face.

Toni: Thank you.  Zorica, the Project is all about inspiration, so when you think about the word inspiration, who do you inspire, and how do you do that?

Zorica: I inspire mostly … actually, it’s my customers I deal with on a daily basis.  I find that most of the customers these days are getting the … they’re beginning to look into more natural, more organic ways to take care of themselves.  Most of them are already … they’re very concerned what they eat and what they’re putting into their bodies, what kind of food they eat.  Also at the same time, I’m trying to educate them that just like what we eat is also extremely important what we put on our body, because everything we apply on our skin basically ends up being absorbed into our bloodstream through the pores of our skin.

Toni: Gosh … and so, the way you inspire women is to educate them to that?

Zorica: Yes, I do.  I educate them.  Like for instance, I will talk about each ingredient that I use in creating a product.  Like for instance, on my website I have a list of ingredients – every single ingredient that I use, how it works, why I use this particular ingredient, what is the benefit of this ingredient.  So the customer can go there, look at all that information, really be educated what it is and make a decision from there if this is good for them or not good for them.  But for me, it’s extremely important for them to know what it is they are putting on their skin.

Toni: I would imagine that it’s pretty scary if we knew just on a regular basis what we put on our skin without knowing what’s inside of it.

Zorica: It’s actually amazing, actually, Toni, especially when it comes to bath and body products.  For instance, a customer goes to the store, she goes to buy the lotion, it smells this great smell and different kind of smells that it can use, and most of those lotions … and I’m not saying that all of them are, but a lot of them are scented with artificial fragrances, and those fragrances are actually bound by chemicals, and when you apply those types of scents on your skin, it actually does end up into your blood stream.  I had an experience myself several years ago, and I got really sick because of toxic exposure to things that I was using on my body.  Suddenly I started reacting to things, and I couldn’t use it any longer.  I would get nauseous, my skin would break out, and I realized that’s what was causing it, and I had to stop.

Toni: And so, Zorica, when you are educating your customer base to this organic product and working with people the way that you are, how do you help other people then explore their own potential?

Zorica: How do I help them to explore their own potential?

Toni: Yes.

Zorica: I always try to … when I talk to the customers, I’m extremely passionate about what I do and information I give them.  A customer will say to me “Gosh, you’re really passionate with what you do – you really love what you do.”  I try to kind of encourage them to do the same thing, whatever it is in their life that they like to do or they’re passionate to, is to incorporate into what actually they do for their living and every day of life.

You know, we all have things that we like to do and sometimes we don’t explore it to the full potential, because really, I’m passionate at what I do because I love to create new scents.  I like creating products that make a difference to people, and there are other people out there that also have certain gifts I think they should use and explore to the fullest potential.

Toni: So you … it’s setting the example that you do as far as the life that you lead, the work that you do, how passionate you are about the products that you create helps other people by example to explore their own potential.  But I’m wondering, how would … if I know what is inside of these products compared to not knowing, how will that help me to explore my potential by the education that you provide around those products?  Is there a correlation there?

Zorica: I’m sorry, Toni, could you repeat that question again?

Toni: Absolutely, and that was a very long-winded question for what I wanted to ask, but I guess my question is this – you provide an education and information around these organic products, and so you stated so eloquently that you help others explore their potential by being just passionate about what you’re doing, and you want others to do the same.  But you also are providing a service by the education and the information that you give, and so I’m wondering, when you educate others to the product use, could you be helping them to explore their own potential as well?

Zorica: I think so.  Oh, absolutely.  I have had many occasions when a customer would say, you know, this really gives me an idea in what I do, that I could do this or I can do that.  I’ve had several occasions.  I go to the store very often, and I actually talk to customers face-to-face.  I’m not just selling my product, I’m actually there talking to them, telling them about the product and how it works and why it is good for them.  So many times, I will meet the customers there.

For instance, like yoga teachers or the psychologists, or they come from different professions in life, and they see me talk about what I do and they say “Gosh, you’re so passionate about what you do – this really gives me an idea to do such-and-such” or “This gives me some new ideas so I can take my business to a new level.”

Toni: Absolutely; and I would also imagine that by learning about what we’re putting on our bodies will also open up the possibility of being educated in what we’re putting inside of our bodies.

Zorica: Oh, absolutely.  That is so important.  I always say … in fact, I have an article next to my bedside that talks about beauty from inside out, and I think it’s extremely important what we put in our bodies – just as important as what we put on our skin, because our body has be nourished from inside as well as from outside.

Toni: So Zorica, what inspires you?

Zorica: What inspires me?  For me, the inspiration is being passionate and love what I do.  I love to create things when a customer tells me like “Oh gosh, Zorica, this is the best lotion I put on my skin.”  Or, I have a customer for years that only uses my face cream because that’s the only thing that works for their skin.  When I get the feedback from my customer of something I have created, and it puts everything I can possibly think to create a product that they need.

Like people with sensitive skin, there’s so many of them out there, they can’t find a product that can actually be helpful to them, and the customer has been my customer for 10 years and she still says “Oh my God, I love your products – I can’t use anything else.”  That’s when they give me a passion to be even more creative, to come up with more ideas, to look into more ways to expand my knowledge.  I don’t know if this makes sense …

Toni: Absolutely, it does.  I would think that that’s also a way that you explore your own potential, by getting the feedback from the client on their needs; that is a way that you probably explore your own potential and your product’s potential by doing the research to see how you can create a product that fits those needs.

Zorica: That’s exactly it, yes.  I do … I spend actually, Toni, hours sometimes doing research on ingredients, on the ingredients that we use in the products, that are being used, to find a better way to preserve, healthier way to preserve the product, what scent I’m putting into that product, what is actually going to do for the customer, and those all are things I find really helps me to expand my potential as much as I can.  All the time, always, always looking for new ways to improve the work I do.

Toni: I’d like to go back to what inspires you for just a bit.  When you are looking for inspiration, where do you tend to find it?  What do you need to do?

Zorica: I personally find I really need to get out somewhere that’s quiet, because as you know, we live in a society of noise constantly around us.  I personally love to go … you know, take a walk on the beach by myself or get into nature.  Those are times and moments I have for myself, that’s when the ideas come to me, and I find very stimulating.  My mind just seems to open up much more because there’s no noise around to distract me from anything.

I love being by myself, like I said, and then I kind of just let thoughts come to me and I get a lot of inspiration.  Sometimes, the ideas that come to me are mind-blowing, like where did this come from?  It’s just kind of opening myself to receiving all these new ideas, and I put it out there and it always seems to come back in some way or the other.  You’ve just got to pay attention to it, and it does come.

Toni: Have you always been so passionate about the work that you do?

Zorica: Yes, I have actually.  Yes.  I’ve been into beauty … beauty has been a passion since I was a little girl, actually.  I remember, I grew up on a farm in a country, what once used to be Yugoslavia, and I used to make creams.  My mom used to make her face creams.  She used to make her face cleanser, and I used to work with her to do those things.  And through my life, I was always very drawn to natural, pure organics because that’s the way I grew up, and …

Toni: I’m sorry … but that’s where your passion came from then?

Zorica: Basically, yes.

Toni: Wow.

Zorica: My passion came from when I was little, actually, seeing my mom doing all these things for her skin, for my sister, for herself.  I was the youngest, so I didn’t use anything yet on my face at the time, but I used to love standing in the kitchen with her and trying to make these little recipes for their skin, and it was fun.  I mean, I’ve always loved it.

Toni: It’s really something how a task that you do in your childhood can turn into a business when you are in your adulthood, and who would have thought?

Zorica: That is true.  Actually, it’s funny; I went to chemistry college.  I was going to be a chemist, and my career took me totally opposite direction, and once I was done with a career that I could no longer do, the first thing I thought about was beauty.  That was the first thing in my mind.

Toni: Well you can tell how passionate you are, and it’s great to hear where your passion came from as well, so that people who are listening and reading the interview know that this just didn’t come from you transitioning out of a job; it came from a lifelong learning and doing that as a child and having your mother do it, and watching your mother and your sister do it, and then turning that into your own business, and the research that you do, and the passion behind that is so important.  That has come across very loud and clear in this interview today.

Zorica: Well thank you, Toni.  I would really recommend very strongly anyone out there to really, truly follow what their passion is, what they really love to do, because behind that comes everything else.  It makes you want to get up in the morning and do … like what am I going to do today?  What shall I create today?  You have to look forward to each day.

Toni: It’s fantastic advice, and thank you so very much for being part of the Get Inspired! Project.

Zorica: It was my pleasure, Toni, thank you.
